Free No-Prep December Calendar Activity
Every year, December sneaks up on us with spirit days, special events, family celebrations, and all kinds of schedule changes—and our students feel it. A simple monthly calendar can be such a grounding tool, not just for organization but for building real, functional language.
It still shocks me how powerful this work can be. I recently asked a group of third graders how many days are in a week… and not one student could answer. These little gaps tell us so much about what our students need and how meaningful a real-world task like this can be.
This free December calendar is one of my favorite activities because it lets students practice vocabulary, WH-questions, sequencing, inferencing, conversational skills, and executive functioning all at once—without feeling like a drill. It’s relevant. It’s visual. And it gives them language for what’s happening in their actual world.
Speech & Language Goals You Can Target
Answering WH-Questions
This activity is packed with "when," "how many," and "what" questions! Students practice:
When does the first day fall?
When is the last day of the month?
How many weekends are in December?
How many school days are in December?
What are you looking forward to this month?
What clues tell us December is a winter month?
Vocabulary Development
Build seasonal and calendar vocabulary including: weekends, weekdays, month, winter, clues, days of the week, and December-specific terms (holidays, winter break, celebrations).
Following Multi-Step Directions
"Number each day in the month" requires students to understand sequencing, start at the correct day of the week, and complete the entire calendar accurately.
Critical Thinking & Inferencing
The question about winter clues targets higher-level language skills as students make connections between the month, season, weather, clothing, activities, and holidays.
Conversational Skills
Use the "looking forward to" question to practice turn-taking, asking follow-up questions, and engaging in meaningful conversation about personal experiences and traditions.
Compare & Contrast
Have students compare December to other months, or compare their English and Spanish calendars to discuss language differences and cultural celebrations.

Bilingual Students: Use both versions to support language development in English and Spanish, discussing cognates and cultural celebrations.
Teletherapy: Easy to share on screen and have students fill in digitally or on paper.
Why Calendar Activities Are Perfect for Speech Therapy
Calendar activities are inherently functional. Students use calendars in real life! This makes the language skills practiced here meaningful and generalizable. Plus, December is full of events students are excited about, which increases engagement and motivation.
Working on time concepts, sequencing, and planning also supports executive functioning skills that many of our students need help developing.
